Marching & Leadership Camp

                        July 16-21, 2012

The Marching & Leadership Camp is designed to bring out the leader in every student. All students will partake in full camp instruction and will sign up for one of the following specialized camps: Drum Major, Section Leader, Color Guard or Percussion all lead by Oregon Marching Band instructors, drum majors and other exceptional college educators. A performance will be held on the last day of camp that includes a field show and performances from each specialty. Eligibility The University of Oregon Drum Major, Section Leader, Percussion and Color Guard Camps are open to all students who are currently completing grades 8-12. Graduating seniors are welcome! No previous marching experience required! Full Camp Instruction Leadership Strategies: Learn what it takes to become an effective leader? Motivational Seminars: Supercharge yourself and others for rewarding success! Marching Fundamentals: Learn a system that works, every time and for everybody. Assisting Your Band Director: Ten things you can do to make your band director's job more successful and enjoyable and, in turn, strengthen your band! Understanding Drill Concepts: Understanding, analyzing, and solving common drill problems is one of the leader's most important skills. Drum Major & Section Leader This specialty focuses on instructional areas that are indispensable to the effective drum major and section leader. The philosophy of the camp is based on contemporary-style drum majoring techniques, with special emphasis on pedagogy, teaching, marching, and leadership skills. Drum majors and section leaders attending the leadership camp will receive valuable training designed to help their individual high school marching ensembles achieve excellence. Drum Major & Section Leader Instruction Conducting: Learn effective conducting techniques that will ensure your band's precision, and compound its musicianship. Pulse Control in the Marching Ensemble: Keeping it all together on the field is absolutely critical! We'll teach you invaluable tactics so you can help your director immediately solve field music problems and guarantee rhythmic stability in your band. Peer-to-Peer Teaching: Students explore effective teaching strategies in all areas, including working with peers. Section Leaders learn about their instrument and how to effectively teach this knowledge to others. Marching: Section leaders will learn contemporary marching teaching strategies and how to effectively perform these skills. Color Guard A highly qualified staff of color guard instructors will teach fundamental flag work that will enhance any program. Individuals, groups, and entire flag corps are welcome to attend. The Color Guard Camp is designed to enhance existing technique for guard, equipment training and modern dance technique, and to implement a system of discipline and education of color guard concepts that will enable students to improve themselves and their individual programs. Color Guard Instruction Flag Concepts: This instruction covers basic fundamentals with checkpoints and references that guarantee a color guard to be cleaner. Movement and Dance: One of the most important aspects of color guard is the flow of body and movement that accompanies the music. Our instructors will teach basic dance, poise, and body control that will greatly enhance a color guard's performance. Marching Percussion and Front Ensemble The percussion camp will focus on developing and enhancing the marching percussion and pit percussion ensembles. Techniques in beginning to advanced rudimentary percussion will be emphasized, as well as beginning to advanced mallet and auxiliary percussion techniques. Students will learn integrated exercises and ensemble music that will be performed at the end of camp. The Marching & Leadership Camp is proud to have Yamaha Artist and Clinician Micah Brusse as the battery instructor for the entire week. Percussion Instruction Fundamentals: Instruction in this area will cover all the basics including hand position, stick height and placement, rudimental techniques, and specialized techniques. Marching: This area covers all marching fundamentals, and specialized techniques for the battery percussion. Performance: The battery and pit will work on performance techniques through the development of contemporary music taught at camp. Timing, listening, musicality, balance, and staging will be some of the main focus areas. Lodging and Meals Students will be housed in UO Residence Halls and will be served all meals in the Residence Hall Cafeterias. UO music majors and Oregon Marching Band members are selected to serve as dorm counselors and are required to live in the dorms the entire week of camp in order to adequately supervise students and care for their safety while in the dorms. Group recreation activities are also planned and supervised by the counselors. Tentative Schedule You will receive a full itinerary in your information packet, sent approximately one month prior to camp. Monday, July 16th 12:00-2:00 pm Registration and check-in 2:00-9:00 pm Leadership seminars, rehearsals, dinner & dorm meetings Tuesday- Friday, July 17th-20th 8:00 Breakfast 9:00 Full Camp Meeting 9:30 Classes & Rehearsals 12:00 Lunch 1:30 Classes & Rehearsals 4:30 Dinner 6:30 Classes & Rehearsals Saturday, July 21st 8:00 Rehearsals 12:00 Family Picnic BBQ (see expenses page for ticket information) 1:15 Final performance (parents are highly encouraged to attend) 3:00 Checkout of dorms Throughout the week recreational activities are also offered and include swimming, frisbee, and volleyball. Students also enjoy taking group trips to the ice cream shop, playing board games, and relaxing outdoors on the beautiful UO campus. Registration Deadline All application materials and fees must be received by June 25, 2012. Late applications will be accepted on a space-available basis only and must pay in full. What Next? Once you have registered we will send you an account balance sheet and a confirmation letter of acceptance. Once you have been accepted to attend the 2012 camp, we will send you a packet of information about one month before camp begins.
